Carrying molasses from Santiago de Cuba to Philadelphia, with a mostly German crew of young escapees from the East, under the command of a merciless captain, they are sailing straight into danger. Little do they know that high in the mountains above the Cuban refinery, the Castro rebels are about to sweep from the hills to overthrow Dictator Fulgencio Batista.

Making return journeys to Cuba as the revolution grows ever more intense and dangerous, Roger finds himself navigating a series of adventures and narrow escapes as he must rescue his crewmates, only to find himself in a journey into the heart of darkness, entangled ever deeper in the shifting loyalties of the revolution. Braving the dangers of political upheaval, rebel guns, and the schemes of the captain leading to murder, intrigue, and mutiny on the stormy Atlantic.
